When was your last bitter or sour moment? When did life last deliver a bitter twist to your day? Life can be bitter and sour. It can be sweet, salty, tangy and spicy. If we trust what life delivers, it brings us all of the flavours required for a full life. As a counsellor I often have clients presenting the bitter lemons they have been given by life and they want to learn how to get rid of them and stop them from ever coming again. But instead I teach them how to make lemonade. (or a lemon tart yum!)
I have discovered that if we look deep into any part of nature there are profound and simple lessons for us wherever we look. I have a cold at the moment and I've been eating and drinking lemons like crazy. I also have a lemon tree that is fully laden with lemons so my world is full of them at the moment. So what have lemons taught me?
They've taught me that too much bitter all at once is uncomfortable to the tongue but deeply healing to my insides. Straight lemon juice sends me wincing with disgust but if I dilute it with a bit of water and a dash of honey, it becomes more comfortable to the tongue and then acts on the inside as an antibacterial, antiviral, immune-booster, digestive aid and liver cleanser.
This is similar to a bitter moment in life. It is uncomfortable on the surface but if we add just a few ingredients to the mix and it becomes an opportunity for building strength, cleansing and transforming.
How to make lemonade out of the bitter moments
Squeeze the juice from the lemons- identify what emotion the bitter life event has triggered within you. Be present with that emotion. Feel it, breathe into it, welcome it.
Add water – Allow any emotions triggered to flow. Move them. Express them. Speak, write, dance, sing, paint.
Add honey – Look for the positive in the situation. See the deeper truth to your experience. Change perspective to add positivity. There only needs to be a tiny bit of positive to completely change the flavour.
Drink – allow yourself to digest the situation and move on.
Next time life sends you a sour lemon, be grateful, use it as an emotional cleanse and enjoy the transformation that comes from it.
