Have you ever met somebody who completely changed the way you saw life?
Somebody who defied the usual perceptions of success, purpose and meaning?
A person who taught you a valuable lesson that sticks with you for life?
I have met many inspiring women on my life adventure, but one in particular stands out.
This lady deeply touched my heart and every heart she came into contact with. She had one amazing skill that changed the lives of so many.
I wish I had a photo of this woman who inspired me so much. Her face was like an angel.
I met this lady when I was working as an Occupational Therapist in a hospital in Melbourne that specialised in treating cancer.
She walked with a skip in her step down the hospital aisles, she had a radiance that completely filled the room, she had a smile that would melt your heart and a touch that would soothe any soul.
She wasn't a doctor, a nurse or a therapist.... she was the cleaner, Jenny.
During my work I would sit beside patients in their hospital beds who were facing the most terrifying moments of their lives.
I would watch doctors, nurses and therapists come and go while I sat with the patients. I was always fascinated to watch the affect that each person had on the patient.
They would range from cold and clinical to friendly and warm. It was amazing to watch the impact that each persons vibe would have on an unwell person who was in such a vulnerable and sensitive position.
Then in walks Jenny, the cleaner, with her feather duster and bin in hand!
Her radiant vibe would be felt before she even entered the room. There would be an air of light and warmth just before she would arrive.
She would always ask if she could enter the patients cubicle first, understanding it was their own personal and sacred space amongst a foreign and scary hospital land and deserved to be respected.
She would look them in the eye, smile with warmth and greet them by their name.
She would gather all the rubbish items around them and dust or wipe their bedside tables. Each stroke of her feather duster was like a sprinkling of love and light.
She would often have a cheeky comment to say or a genuine compliment to offer before she would depart.
I would turn to watch the patients face whenever she would visit and every time they would be lifted, expanded or brighter in some way.
The humility and grace with which this powerful woman worked was so inspiring. In my eyes she was one of the most powerful healers in the whole hospital yet with the lowest wage.
Every word and action that flowed from her was filled with compassion and joy.
To me she was a perfect example of living a purposeful life.
So much of society spends time and focus searching for their true purpose and the career that is their deepest calling, yet this cleaner found hers in the simplest of duties!
The beautiful lesson this woman taught me is ....
It is not so important what we do but the presence, compassion and love with which we do it!
So rather than waiting until you discover your life purpose, trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be for now and inject love into everything you do. Allow yourself to live with your whole heart and allow kindness to flow through you even in the simple moments.
