As I look back on my life there are many events, times and influential people who have shaped my attitude and the way I live my life.
The greatest inspiration of all was working with the terminally ill and the dying.
It is nearly 15 years ago now that I held the hand and offered an ear to those on their death beds yet the look in their eyes, their words and the powerful influence is still so clear... as if it was just yesterday.
The emotion that stood out the most for me was seeing the pain and anguish of regret.
...not so much the regret of what people did but the regret of what they didn't do and what was held back.
A life only half lived.
Those who had lived their life based on other peoples expectations, or those who had put off so many of their own dreams out of fear, doubt or being what others wanted them to be... would face death with more disappointment than peace.
At the end of life, it seemed that people were replaying all of the opportunities they had let pass by and reviewing all of the excuses they had made.
Their deepest hearts yearnings were surfacing from beneath the false promise of tomorrow as time had run out.
In my early twenties I found these people a massive inspiration.
MASSIVE... so massive that the ripple effect still inspires my life today.
It inspired me to take life by the antlers and ride it like a playful roller coaster.
...to dig deep inside myself and uncover my deepest yearnings and follow them with courage, curiosity and faith.
It inspired me to value trying and having a go above the fear of failure or the potential embarrassment of making mistakes.
I've failed a thousand times and made a million mistakes but if my days ended tomorrow I can honestly say that I have given life my all and achieved success in my own eyes.
I've followed my dreams, faced many fears, slay many inner dragons, I've experienced many of my deepest desires and leaps into the vast silent mystery beyond.
I am on my knees in gratitude to those people who held my hand and looked me straight in the eye on their death bed and urged me to follow my heart.
So those of YOU who are bravely trusting the words of your soul... I salute you, I encourage you to keep going and I honor your courage to walk to the beat of your own heart.
And to those of YOU who don't yet trust your inner voice and have been fooled by the minds excuses and procrastination (you know who you are)...
