We all have a dream but the road is often paved with giant excuses.
What's your dream and what is your list of excuses not to realise it?
I'd love to share with you the excuses that held me back for years and prevented me from realising my dream, in hope that it will inspire you to move past your excuses.
From a very young age I heard and read about the kind of love and the quality of peace that a Buddha knows.
The kind of peace that is beyond our circumstances, that is not determined by how our life looks on the outside.
The kind of love that is present with or without people in our lives and how they may treat us.
I made a commitment to myself 20 years ago to realise this love and this peace that exists beyond conditions.
It meant more to me to realise the essence of peace than to create usual western dream of a life that was full of achievement and relationships that were rosey.
I wanted to get right to the source of love. I wanted to immerse myself in the peace that a buddha knows.
I had the deep yearning, I had the drive, and I had the feirce commitment to truth.
My souls calling lead me to focus beyond the day to day struggles that we all get caught in and fix my gaze, focusing firmly on spiritual awakening.
BUT at each step and each turn on the adventure there were big walls of excuses to navigate. Ahhhh where's the hammer to break down the walls.
The biggest excuse that kept holding me back...
The most powerful excuse that kept me aimlessly wandering on the edge of the mighty cliff of realisation....
..was that “I was too ordinary to awaken.”
“Just an everyday girl from the suburbs of Melbourne with an average middle class upbringing couldn't wake up.”
“Awakening is only for monks and nuns.”
“Spiritual realisation is only for those who live in ashrams and monaseries.”
"Spiritual awakening is not for people who own houses, cars, have relationships and career ambitions. Oh no no no!"
Blah blah blah and on and on went the excuses.
Life would continually draw me back into it's drama and cycle of suffering because my lame excuses appeared true. I wouldn't allow my ego to surrender and I kept clinging to my excuses for dear life.
I kept seeing evidence over and over again that all the awakened one's were the people who had long white beads, asain faces, no possessions and grew up in spiritual communities.
My excuses led me to believe that spiritual realisation and earthly pleasures had to remain mutually exclusive. I felt that I had to choose one or the other! Damn!
I felt that I couldn't have romantic relationships, a thriving business and awaken spiritually.
UNTIL the day that I finally became frustrated and fed up with my excuses of why not.
I could see that these excuses were preventing me from fully exploring our human capabilities and mastering the fullness of who I am on all levels.
I realised that these excuses were an obstacle to the realisation of the powerful nature that it at the essence of us all. I made a decision that I would do whatever it takes to awaken.
Soon after this realisation, and the readiness to move past my excuses... many teachers began to appear.
Masters appeared who began there spiritual journeys from humble beginnings like myself.
Western masters who also grew up amongst more superficial western values that were continually shoved down our throats of money, consumerism, success, outer achievements.
So called 'ordinary people' began to appear on the spiritual scene who had the courage to dive to the core of their being and fully realise there extraordinary nature.
People who had masterfully combined inner spiritual realisations with outer worldly manifestations.
Masters who walk amongst us and live seemingly ordinary lives with extraordinary pure awareness and spiritual realisation.
Wise sages who run successful businesses and earn an abundant living doing what they love.
As soon as I found a powerful mentor to guide me... my excuses dissolved into an amusing puddle of insignificance and awakening occurred.
Awakening to true peace and love is possible for every single one of us.
It is not only possible... it is the very reason we are here on this earth and housed in these seemingly separate bodies.
Awakening is possible for business people, for farmers, for parents, for single people, males, females, the young, the old, the rich and the strapped for cash folk.
We are all capable of awakening to the true magic and miracle of life.
It is not way off in the distance... it is right here in this moment hiding behind the wall of excuses we create.
The doorway to awakening is through our current challenges and circumstances.
All that it requires is a readiness and a decision to focus on what is true.
