" Through my love for you, I want to express my love for the whole cosmos, the whole of humanity, and all beings." Thich Nhat Hanh
Our culture is obsessed with romantic relationships as the ultimate expression of love... yet love has many faces. It hides in the darkest of places. It appears when you least expect it. It underlies all experiences. In fact there is no place that it is absent... even amongst the bloody battlefeilds of war. Love is the wellspring from which we are born, our life adventure is paved in it's glory and it is the ultimate destination. Love is the glue that holds the entire universe and beyond together.
I would love to share with you a great love story that reveals the way I see love. A tale of exquistite beauty. The tale of a love that overcomes all boundaries. A tale of love that guides you home.
Once upon an eternal moment.....
nce upon an eternal moment there lived a vast expanse of love. This love was so deep, so unconditional and so ginormous it was beyond measure. No measuring tape ever existed that could capture the boundlessness of this love.
This love was beyond measure, beyond space and time, beyond words, beyond imagination
and beyond form. "Super dooper massively humungously infinite and freakin
everywhere and nowhere" is the closest description I can use!
Words are only pointers and can never adequately capture this love's vast magnificence.
(Take a deep breath now!)
This vast love dreamed of experiencing itself.
So it blew itself up and exploded into a trillion pieces.
These pieces of love spread all across the universe. For galaxies and galaxies there was love spread wide and far in thousands of difference sizes, shapes and forms.
The only way that the vast love could explode into pieces was to create light and dark
versions of itself. A duality of opposites was needed to create separation,
contrast and the subsequent remerging.
BIG BANG SHAZAM!
Love exploded into the duality of opposities and became the sun, the moon, the stars
and planets. This love became earth, trees, rivers, oceans and mountains. This love
became men, women, birds and tigers. This love became mud, dirt, cockroaches
and spiders. This love became rainbows, sunsets, flowers and gold.
This love became night and day, fear and joy, war and peace.
Everything in existence was created in the name of L..O..V..E.
Both light and dark.
One big dance of differing expressions of love moving and flowing,... separating and merging.
Boom shaka laka boom... let's dance in the name of love yeah!
As a human being amongst this vast universe of love, it is easy to forget that everything we experience is born from love and returns to love. When life doesn't go 'our way', when the physical body is in pain, when our heart is heavy with anguish, when we witness painful actions of hatred in the world... it is easy to believe that love is absent.
This difficulty came from the simple misunderstanding that love and fear were enemies instead of star crossed lovers that yearn to merge as one . All experiences are labelled as good or bad based on whether they come from love or fear.
I would like to suggest that fear is not BAD as it is so often labelled.
(see previous blog post)
Fear is simply the energy that separates us so that we can then 'fall in love' and merge again. Fear is an essential player in the game of life... the dance of separation and merging,
expansion and contraction, birth and death.
Fear is essentially another name for love.
All of the discomfort, pain, fear, sadness and anger that we see and experience in our world,
are doorways to love and an opportunity to 'fall in love' with the moment.
Life is not a battle to remove and run away from all that isn't love
and to gather and seek all that is love.
Life is a celebration of love in all it's colours and contrasts.
Each time any discomfort, fear or separation is present we can resist it OR
we can fall in love with the moment and surrender to it.
The true love that we all seek is simply the merging with our essence of love.
When we fight and resist any unpleasant experiences we are reminded
that the resistance of the natural duality of life creates suffering.
The greatest love of all (RIP Whitney Houston) is to face all of life... as it is...
with love, openness and surrender.
The ultimate love affair is...
to enjoy the illusion of separation and the duality dance of life.
to enjoy the whole rainbow of experiences and feelings we humans are subject to.
to surrender to all that is and to allow it to lead us back to the source of who we are...
THE END... no wait this is a never ending story!
