UNAVOIDABLE TRUTH... Nailing the skill of marketing is essential to run a successful business.
I used to HATE marketing with a passion. I was good at conducting my sessions, I just wanted clients to fall magically from the sky... so that I could just do what I do best!
When I worked in the hospital system there was a constant stream of regular client referrals but when I started my own private practice I felt stuck.
Where are all the clients, how can I find them and attract their interest in my service?
It was frustrating to have so much to share but only a sparse few to share it with. I relied only on word of mouth as my marketing tool, which of course works, but it is a slow process.
I was having a Mexican stand off with marketing. I was resisting and avoiding it like the plague. So my business continued to struggle to keep afloat.
I hoped and prayed that they would come and they started to trickle in, but I didn't really see any success in my business until I had the courage to look my fears of marketing in the face.
So let's look marketing in the face together now... shall we?
What is marketing really?
Marketing is defined as the art of communicating the value of a product, service or brand to customers or consumers for the purpose of promoting or selling.
I like to simplify things that I'm scared of... so I narrowed it down to one word in the definition above that I felt I was good at... communicating!
STEP ONE - Communicate! Yep I can do that. I have great social skills. I can talk, I can write, I'm creative. I can create ads, websites, emails.
So that's exactly where I began marketing. I simply started talking about my business and my service more often instead of being shy and hiding behind my doubts and fears. I found lots of different ways to communicate my message out to the world. Face to face talking, creating flyers, creating a website, posting ads, writing emails etc.
But then I realised that some of the people I was talking to were not really interested in what I had to say, so I got more clever about communicating and became more targeted.
STEP TWO – Targeted Communication! I worked out who my ideal clients were and what they were yearning for and I found out where exactly they were hanging out.
Sounds so simple but I wasn't doing it. I was being too general in my business and talking to anyone who would listen but as soon as I narrowed down exactly who are the types of people I loved to work with and who loved my style... I was set.
I then started communicating specifically to them and BAM! Clients flowing!
STEP THREE – Connect Message to Market – When I connected my unique magic and message to my ideal market my business flow moved to the next level.
This whole scary world of marketing then become fun, inspiring and I realised I was actually good at it once I got over the fear.
It wasn't sleazy, pushy or salesy which is what held me back from marketing for years. It was soulful, authentic, fun and really powerful!
I was good at communicating because I was passionate about my message. I could talk about health, wellness and inner peace until the cows come home. So I kept communicating a consistent message to my ideal clients until my business boomed!
Now that I am focusing more on business coaching I have shifted the area of passion that I'm talking about but it's still the love of communication that now overshadows that scary word marketing.
STEP FOUR – Make friends with Marketing
So as you can see from my journey. True marketing that is natural, authentic and powerful is simply communicating with honesty from a place of passion and soul. It is just about finding the most fertile soil (ideal clients) to plant your powerful seeds (your message)!
Marketing is not the enemy. It is a powerful and essential friend for any business success. Try reframing it as communicating your message to the right people and business success will be yours.
